REACH - Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals

REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals) is the new European Chemicals Regulation, which replaces the current policy with different systems for “new” and “existing” chemicals.

REACH

  • regulates the handling with chemical substances either on their own, in preparation or in articles
  • covers all chemical substances, dangerous or not
  • places responsibility for the safety of chemicals on manufacturers and importersaims at the improvement of the safe use of substances in all uses

REACH [Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006] came into force on June 1, 2007. The pre-registration period ended on December 1, 2008.

Pre-registration
LANXESS has pre-registered by the set date all substances it currently has on the market that requires registration. _Download

Pre-registration numbers
LANXESS will not communicate the pre-registration numbers of any of the components of the polymers or document these in the safety data sheet of the polymers, because these constitute trade secrets. Should, in exceptional cases, the disclosure of composition become necessary, e.g. for re-imports, a trustee is to be employed.

Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC)
The REACH regulation stipulates an admission procedure for substances of very high concern. The status as such is confirmed officially by the ECHA in the list of candidates on their homepage.

ION products do not contain any of the SVHC substances as cited in the current ECHA Candidate List:

Use Descriptors

ION products, such as the Lewatit® and Ionac® series  represent polymers. Since polymers in general are exempt from the obligation to register under REACH, exposure assessment for making risk characterization is not required. The major uses only need to be mentioned in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
