Investments in Bitterfeld and Leverkusen bear fruit
Ion exchange resin production booming: Honors for plant managers and teams
The investments made by LANXESS in its ion exchange resin production facilities in Bitterfeld and Leverkusen are certainly bearing fruit. Jean-Marc Vesselle, head of Global Product Management and Strategic Development in the Ion Exchange Resins business unit, is delighted: “Now completed, the investment program – which cost a total of EUR 9 million – is well proving its worth. In the last 18 months, the plants have increased production volumes of our extremely popular premium product Lewatit by more than ten percent.”
On June 26, 2008, Bitterfeld plant manager Gerold Schade, his Leverkusen colleague Wolfgang Zarges and their respective teams were duly honored for their achievements and production records by Michael Zobel. The head of the Ion Exchange Resins business unit (BU ION) presented them with awards as part of the celebrations to mark the commissioning of a new Lewatit production line in Leverkusen.
The expansion of the ion exchange resin facility at the site brings a considerable and urgently needed increase in capacity. “Demand for high-quality ion exchange resins has risen dramatically. Our order books are full. To cope with the growth in demand, we had to add a further production line to our plant in Leverkusen,” explains Vesselle.
For Vesselle, it was extremely important that customers could be supplied with the required amounts as quickly as possible without any compromises in terms of quality. According to plant manager Zarges, the necessary building work was completed in only eight months. “For a project of this scale, we would normally reckon with a period of 18 months between authorization being granted and the first product coming off the line,” he remarks. Zarges also points out an additional achievement: “Although the building work was carried out in a plant that has been working at full capacity for two years, it did not have any significant impact on the plant’s output.”

Innovative drinking water production
Water, the world's most important foodstuff, is in short supply in many regions of the globe. Less than one percent of global water reserves is available for human consumption.
Products from LANXESS are therefore being used all over the world to purify drinking water. Lewatit® ion exchange resins play a key role in this process by removing pollutants from water. Hereby Lewatit® premium products are used to remove heavy metals, like lead, uranium and copper; harmful anions, like nitrate, borate, perchlorate, chromate and arsenate; and special hydrocarbons from drinking water. In the process of ion exchange, the contaminated water is passed through a bed of the resins. There, the pollutants are filtered as the ions adsorb the harmful substances and release harmless ions in their place.

Green Energy in Brussels
Business Unit Ion Exchange Resins attended the World Biofuels Markets Congress staged in March at Brussels.
More than 1,300 participants from 58 countries and over 100 exhibitors were attracted to the third World Biofuels Markets Congress held in March at Brussels. Business Unit Ion Exchange Resins (BU ION) was represented with its own stand showing GreenFuel (GF) products such as 101, 202, 303, 404 and 505, manufactured by the Department for Catalysis and Chemicals Processing. Peter Haupt (Head of Marketing Catalysis and Chemical Processing), Jean Moriau (Project Manager Western Europe BU ION), and Bart Goossens (Sales Representative) answered questions from visitors. The response was lively and most visitors had come from East European countries, the Far East and Asia Pacific (APAC).
Visitors were particularly interested in GF 101, a product reducing the free fatty acid (FFA) content in biofuel from 100 to less than one percent, making raw materials for biofuel production more cost-efficient. As prices for these raw materials have increased significantly the search is on for other, less costly raw materials such as spent vegetable oil or animal fat.
BU ION attended the show with the main objective to improve its position in the biofuels market and to promote its GF products package as a complete solution. This package comprises GF 101, 202, 303, 404, and 505. While GF 101 reduces the fat content, GF 202 is used to purify biodiesel to comply with the EU standard. GF 303 removes glycerin generated during biodiesel production, and GF 404 and 505 are used to purify this glycerin further to pharmaceutical quality.

LANXESS increases prices for ion exchange resins
The reasons for the measure are the continued very high cost of the raw materials and the increase in energy prices.
Effective April 15, 2008, LANXESS will increase its prices worldwide for the Lewatit and Ionac ion exchange resin ranges. In Europe and Japan the prices will rise by 7 to 9 percent and in the NAFTA region by 12 to 15 percent. In the APAC region – excluding Japan – the prices are being raised by 15 to 18 percent. The reasons for the measure are the continued very high cost of the raw materials and the increase in energy prices, which also lead to more expensive transportation.
The premium products of the Ion Exchange Resins business unit play an instrumental role in industrial water treatment, food processing, the purification of water and manufacture of ultrapure water and the remediation of contaminated areas, such as those with a high arsenic content.

Green Fuel
Ion exchange resins: at the international “Fuels of the Future 2007” conference, November 26/27 in Berlin, LANXESS will showcase innovative products for tomorrow’s mobility.
The products showcased by Business Unit Ion Exchange Resins include Lewatit GF 202, an ion exchange resin significantly simplifying the production of biodiesel fuel and extremely efficient in removing impurities such as glycerin, soap and salts that would damage engines. Lewatit GF 202 facilitates the production of biodiesel fuel at quality levels compliant with the European standard EN 14214 without the need for costly water-washing treatment or throw-away filtration substrates. Lewatit GF 202 is renewable and has long-service endurance periods of up to eight years. Biodiesel plants utilizing Lewatit GF 202 are easy to operate with unparalleled cost efficiency and require but little maintenance. The resin cost per liter of processed biodiesel is as little as approximately €1.00 per 5,000 liters (€0.75 per 1,000 US gallons). This well-established technology has been deployed since 1995 for plants with capacities of between 1,000 and 500,000 metric tons per year.

Many people today still associate the term ‘ion exchanger’ with water treatment or demineralizing applications only. It’s true that around 70 percent of all ion exchange resins go to this sector, but there are many other applications, of which biodiesel production is one example.
